Over the last 10 years, Dr. Fontecchio has worked to create a sustainable system of experiential learning in STEM Education at Drexel University. The grant portfolio for development included funding through NSF, the Dept. Of Education, and the National Math and Science Initiative.  The core building block was an NSF GK-12 grant: Catalyzing STEM Education via the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenges.

The lessons learned and foundation developed in the NSF GK-12 program led to the creation of the Center for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE) at Drexel University, which today includes six grant funded programs and 2 foundation funded initiatives focused on training undergraduate and graduate students in STEM pedagogical methods. All of the CASTLE activities include experiential learning components to reinforce skills from the classroom and prepare STEM majors for careers as educators, both in the classroom and in the community.

In this talk, Dr. Fontecchio will discuss the development of a sustainable Center focused on STEM experiential learning, outcomes from across the portfolio, and how effective experiential learning is in training future STEM educators.

The seminar will take place at 10:00 am in 155 Hitchcock Hall.
