Highlights from ASEE 2018

Faculty and staff from the EED traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah, to participate in the 125th annual American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) conference from June 23-26, 2018. Over 4,400 engineering professors, deans, instructors, and students representing over 500 universities and colleges attended the conference to exchange ideas and interact with colleagues. The conference boasted over 400 technical sessions featuring peer-reviewed papers in all disciplines of engineering.

The annual conference illuminates insights within Engineering Education and allows members of the EED to learn from and to share research with the larger engineering education community. Annually, faculty, staff, and students showcase the growth of the EED, present their work of the past year, and network with current and emerging leaders in the field. Knowledge sharing is abundant in these spaces. EED members have returned with new ideas, new connections, and so much to contribute to the College of Engineering and the EED. Take a look at some of the honors and awards our faculty received this year.

Dr. Rick Freuler, EED Professor of Practice, was named a Fellow for the Society in the spring of this year and received his plaque at the conference during the ASEE Awards Ceremony Luncheon on Wednesday, June 27. The Grade of Fellow is one of professional distinction and is conferred by the ASEE Board of Directors upon a society member with outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience in engineering or engineering technology education or allied field, who has made appropriate and important individual contributions to engineering or engineering technology education, as well as considerable individual contributions to ASEE.

Teresa Porter, Meg West, and Dr. Rachel Kajfez, EED Assistant Professor, were part of the team that was awarded the ASEE Pre-College Engineering Education (PCEE) Division's Honorable Mention for Best Paper. OSU College of Education Department of Teaching and Learning faculty, Drs. Kathy Malone, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Karen Irving, Associate Professor, served as co-authors on the award-winning paper entitled “The Effect of Teachers' Professional Development on Implementing Engineering in Elementary Schools (RTP)”. The Best Paper Award is given to nominated papers that best represent the division’s standards for quality and contribution.

EED Assistant Professor, Dr. Emily Dringenberg, and EED graduate student, Amena Shermadou, along with Professor Amy Rachel Betz from Kansas State University authored “Reactions from First-year Engineering Students to an In-depth Growth Mindset Intervention” which was named a Finalist for Best Paper in the first year programs division. The Best Paper Award is given to nominated papers that best represent the division’s standards for quality and contribution.
