Department of Engineering Education Assistant Professor, Dr. David Delaine, participated in the Latin & Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions Conference, 2016 in San Jose, Costa Rica. As a collaborator with the University System of Maryland Delegation (UMBC, Bowie, UMES, & College Park), he served as a Mentor-in-Residence. He actively mentored undergraduate and masters students as well as Ph.D. candidates on international experiences and culture, work-life balance, and academic development and success. All participating members of the conference contributed to an ongoing research study, led by Dr. Renetta Tull, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, by actively blogging throughout the proceedings.

During the conference, Professor Delaine presented two talks: in Culture-Informed Practice, he discussed how culture can be utilized to improve academic and professional outcomes. Dr. Delaine, whose mother is a native of Costa Rica, related his personal and family experiences in the country and explained how leveraging his Costa Rican culture has led to success within his career field. His second presentation, Global Student Leadership – Impact towards Career Growth highlighted research-informed outcomes on engineering leadership.

Deliane earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Drexel University. He joins the faculty at The Ohio State University after having served as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar at the Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo.
