This showcase is designed to highlight outstanding design projects within our courses as recognized through a nomination process by the student’s peers, instructional staff, and corporate partners. Descriptions for the projects in each of the courses presenting are included below. 

ENGR 1181 – FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING I 

Student teams of 4 are tasked with developing a game (or games) using MATLAB and documenting the project. This software design project challenges students to combine problem-solving strategies, the design process, and programming skills in a team setting to solve a real-world programming scenario.  

ENGR 1182/1188 – FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING II 

Student teams of 4 complete a semester-long, open-ended and user-centered design project. Each team is challenged to identify, research, and fully define a unique opportunity to create value and an associated engineering problem to solve. Teams then design a solution to address the identified opportunity, and build and test a prototype of their design using a variety of resources including SolidWorks, MATLAB, Arduino microcontrollers, machine shop tools, 3D printing, laser cutting, and more! Students are asked to carefully consider user needs, design constraints, and stakeholder interests throughout the project.  

ENGR 1281H – FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING HONORS I 

Students work in pairs to develop a game that incorporates the programming logic and techniques that they developed over the course of the semester. Written in C++ and using a custom graphics library, the games range from classic brick breakers to complex RPG adventures. Throughout the project, students employ the engineering design process to create their game, while building a custom website to document the process and market the product. At the end of the project, the students have created a game that fulfills faculty- and team-identified technical criteria in a context that is fun and encourages collaboration. 

ENGR 1221 – INTRO TO PROGRAMMING IN MATLAB 

Student teams of 3 develop an engineering simulation tool with a graphical user interface implemented in MATLAB. Students choose an application area related to an engineering field; examples include automotive simulations, chemical reactor modeling, orbital mechanics, traffic modeling, and integrated pest management for agriculture. 

 

Student teams will be assigned a judging window on the day of the competition, where our judging partners will have the opportunity to evaluate the project for ranking in our award show at the end of the event. Friends, family, and the general public will all have the opportunity to engage with the students at their booths.
