Abstract

As the need for high-skilled, dynamic workers increases, there is a major push from a multitude of outlets for students to enter into STEM fields. Unfortunately, some students enter an environment in which they are expected to succeed; however, without the necessary support systems in place, it can be difficult for them to do so. Therefore, administrators, educators, and researchers must take necessary actions to enhance student success. Utilizing both the Academic Plan Model and the Model of Co-Curricular Support, this talk addresses how data and knowledge of student characteristics can enhance the success of first-year engineering students and understudied groups in engineering, such as non-traditional students. Through the use of learning analytics, computational methods, and qualitative inquiry I highlight the importance of utilizing data to design better support systems for engineering students.

Bio

Dr. Cory Brozina is the Associate Chair of the Rayen School of Engineering and Director of the First-Year Engineering Program at Youngstown State University. He has his BS and MS in Industrial & Systems Engineering, and his PhD in Engineering Education all from Virginia Tech. He is currently the PI on 3 NSF funded projects, of which one is for $1M and the largest ever at YSU. His research combines student support and success with analytics to develop better support mechanisms for a wide range of students, including first-year, commuter, and non-traditional engineering students.
