Seminar Series | From Anti-Black to Pro-Black: Recommendations for Engineering Education Research

All dates for this event occur in the past.

James Holly Jr January 22

Abstract

Research is essential to the infrastructure of education and plays a prominent role in driving curriculum, policy, and professional practice. Therefore, engineering education research (EER) is critical to driving the impetus and approach to racial equity within engineering education and practice. This presentation will spotlight how anti-Blackness is embedded in EER practices and delineate its roots in America’s systemic racism. Centering the experience of Black people within the engineering education community helps reframe the problem of racial/ethnic exclusion, while generating a new way forward through pro-Black EER (PEER). PEER uses critical methodologies, frameworks, and intentional citation practices to assert the genius of Black people.

Biography

Dr. James Holly, Jr. is a native Detroiter, educator, and researcher focused on mitigating anti-Blackness in P-20 STEM education. He has a bachelor's degree from Tuskegee University and a master's degree from Michigan State University, both in Mechanical Engineering, which inspired his pursuit of a doctoral degree in Engineering Education from Purdue University as he sought to revolutionize the conceptualization of engineering presented to Black youth. Dr. Holly, Jr. is currently an Assistant Professor of Urban STEM Education at Wayne State University, where he participates in the training of STEM educators that aspire to affirm and amplify the assets of urban non-White students. His research explores the complexities of teaching the STEM disciplines in an urban context in pursuit of equity and justice, the process of developing engineering-literacy among pre-service science and mathematics teachers, and how the personal narratives of Black people with STEM degrees can inform equitable STEM education.
