Bios

Mike Eastman is Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Continuous Improvement at Rochester Institute of Technology. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology and MS in Computer Science from RIT. He earned a PhD in Curriculum, Instruction,and the Science of Learning from University at Buffalo. His research interests include the culture of engineering education, constructivism and inquiry-based learning, equity & inclusion in STEM, Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER), and embedded systems design. Unfortunately, he spends considerably more time administering than researching. When not engaged in the campus community, he is likely to be knee-deep in a mountain stream, tightly grasping a fly rod, and struggling to regain his balance.

Randy Yerrick is Dean of the Kremen School for Education and Human Development at CSU Fresno. He has also served as Professor of Science Education at SUNY Buffalo where he Associate Dean and Science Education Professor for the Graduate School of Education. Dr. Yerrick maintains an active research agenda focusing on two central questions: 1) How do scientific norms of discourse get enacted in classrooms and 2) To what extend can historical barriers to STEM learning be traversed for underrepresented students through expert teaching practices? For his efforts in examining science for the under-served, Dr. Yerrick has received numerous research and teaching awards including the Journal of Research in Science Teaching Outstanding Research Paper Award, Journal of Engineering Education “Wickenden Best Paper Award” (Honorable Mention), the Most Outstanding College Science Teacher Award from the Science Teacher Association of New York State, the Teaching Innovation Award from The State University of New York, and The STAR Award for Outstanding Mentoring. He has held fellowships in several organizations such as the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure, the San Diego State Center for Teaching and Learning, and has on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, served as their Director of Communications, and served for nearly 20 years as an Apple Distinguished Educator. Professor Yerrick is also a founding Member of the Science Educators for Equity, Diversity and Social Justice.

Dr. Monica Miles has a joint appointment as the associate director of University at Buffalo’s Great Lakes Program and the Coastal Literacy Specialist between UB, New York Sea Grant and Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She earned a doctorate from the Curriculum, Instruction and the Science of Learning Program in UB’s Graduate School of Education, with a concentration in science education in 2017.Monica’s research focuses on the role of identity, racialized experiences, marginalization in K-12 and higher STEM spaces, and the inclusion on environmental justice-oriented teaching approaches. She seeks to promote solutions for creating inclusive STEM environments for underrepresented students and boldly challenges systems of oppression. Monica maintains a commitment to social justice efforts through critical examinations of society and education.
