Alumni Spotlight

The Department of Engineering Education teaches thousands of students every academic year. The newly offered PhD program plans to expand that number futher. We interviewed some of our program alumni to get insight on the program and highlight our amazing alumni activity.

 

Dr. Leroy Long, Assistant Professor of Engineering Fundamentals at Embry-Ruddle Aeronautical University 

Dr. Long at his graduation ceremonyWhat is your current position? 
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Engineering Fundamentals at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. I am finishing my third year on the tenure track. 
What was your research at OSU?

As a graduate student at OSU, I first worked on biomechanics research involving human locomotion and energetic costs to create a thesis for my Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later, in my PhD program, I worked on engineering education research involving first-year engineering students' technology use as well as research on Black and Latino men in STEM fields.

What was your role within the EED?

For over five years, I worked as a graduate teaching associate with the EED before it officially became a department. I earned my PhD from OSU the year before the EED was officially established as a department within the College of Engineering. While I was in graduate school, the EED was called the EEIC or Engineering Education Innovation Center. Fortunately, I was able to participate on a professional development committee that helped the EEIC become the EED. I was also present during the search for an inaugural department chair, who ultimately became Dr. Monica Cox.

What was your favorite part about attending OSU?

While at OSU, I really enjoyed teaching engineering students, developing curriculum and serving in a leadership role. I also enjoyed working on a research team to improve the success of underrepresented students in engineering. Furthermore, I enjoyed volunteering on campus and in the community to broaden student participation in STEM. In each of the aforementioned roles, I was able to meet a lot of successful people and form a strong network.  


Do you have any advice that you would give students pursing a PhD in Engineering Education?

For students pursuing a PhD in Engineering Education, I would first advise them to consider jobs in K-12 schools, government and industry sectors as well as higher education. Second, I would recommend exploring administrative, teaching, and research roles. Third, I would suggest they consider their long-term goals and use them as motivation for success. I not only want to gain tenure as a faculty member but I also want to start a STEM middle and high school. Lastly, I would tell PhD students in Engineering Education to become confident and resilient because many people will ask you to defend the field and question the legitimacy of your work, especially if it involves diversity and inclusion. 

 

Dr. Kari Jordan, Director of Assessment and Community Equity at The Carpentries

What is your current position? 
I am currently working as the Director of Assessment and Community Equity at The Carpentries. The Carpentries teach foundational coding, and data science skills to researchers worldwide. I encourage current PhD students enrolled in the program to check out Carpentries, or contact me to learn more!

What was your research at OSU?

My research was titled "Intervention to Improve Engineering Self-Efficacy and Sense of Belonging of First-Year Engineering Students".

What was your role within the EED?

I worked as a Gradate Research Assistant and later as a Lecturer.

What was your favorite part about your research at OSU?

I belonged to a community of practice. Coming from an engineering background, it was initially difficult to step into an "education heavy" program, as I was not accustomed to its norms. The faculty and my fellow colleagues helped with that transition, and my experience was extremely rewarding. 

Do you have any advice that you would give students pursing a PhD in Engineering Education?

Write every day, even if it's just for 30 minutes.
